Awesomeness of last.fm

Last.Fm is a really awesome (to use this vague term) web 2.0 site. This site is in an ideal position in the market. What started as a simple this-is-what-I-listen-to stat site grew to a much larger community site, where people can find and share information about music. People still share their statistics, and this information is used to your own advantage. Music recommendations for example based on what other people listen.

My latest really great experience is this: A Paul Gilbert concert. Last.fm gives you a load of event recommendations based on what you listen. If it wasn’t for Last.fm i would have missed this concert. Now I wonder, do they cooperate with the ticketmaster service? It would make a lot of sense if they did, this is clearly a win-win situation for the site (commission) and for the ticket seller (more costumers) and the user (more concerts!).

The Google effect

My nickname, which I thought was a pretty unique one (atleast in it’s spelling) does not seem to be… unique. When I google on my nickname this blog comes in fourth. My Last.fm page is the first and a photo made by dodo of me in a Japanese metro second. Thirdth is some dude which isn’t me, but uses the same nickname as me for his ebay.
My blog is the fourth entry. Which uses the wrong link, it should be this. And I can’t seem to get it much higher. If I really want to, I have to use some form of the much discussed (especially on Digg) Search Engine Optimization, and outrank Last.fm and Ebay on the Drakonen keyword, which will be hard to do if not impossible.

Phone stuff, unlimited internet

Last week I took a new subscription for my phone. t-mobile has a nice offer called web and walk. 9.50E for unlimited internet access on your phone. Getting it is not easy though. You can’t get in on their website, and as I do not call that much their store wasn’t an option too. They tried to sell me a rather expensive one which was about 20E. I went to a few other shops, and ended at T for Telecom. They offerd me a plan with 150 minutes of call time for 9E, so the total would be 18.50E.

Now what i would do with 150 minutes is a mystery to me, but you can’t get it any lower in that combination. Now I have Unlimited internet access on my phone, and (for me) unlimited calling time. Now I just need some friends to call…

btw, T-mobile sucks for the rest. They have a really bad site which only works in IE. The flash is too much either, in firefox the menus pop under the flash movie. If you don’t use something like flashblock the site is pretty much unusable in Firefox.

Them bastard also did not send me the new phone settings (which KPN/Hi does), I had to make a call, and make them send them to me. That wasn’t such a big deal… but still pretty annoying. The most annoying part was that only the default web browser could connect to the internet. No Opera, no ssh, no IRC. But Opera has a nice page where you can see the CORRECT SETTINGS (bad t-mobile) so any application can access the internet. I love Opera.

All I need now is a decent mail client which supports IMAP, maybe I should write my own in python.

A few days left until I go to Japan. I wasn’t nervous but thanks to my girlfriend, I am!

The school year is finished, made a crappy, non-working game. And failed for mathematics in games. Better luck next year!

I’m going to Japan! i’ll be leaving on the 10th juli and be back on the 31th juli. A full 3 weeks of vacation with Vash and a couple od other persons. I’ll meet the rest of the group tomorrow, probably play a lot of games and stuff like that..

Yesterday I went out drinking with the usual school gang. We went to cafe Crea to see an open podium. The performers were absolutely great this time, although the same italian-woman-charmer-and-I-don’t-sing-that-good-guy won again this time. To be honest, he didn’t deserve it. There were far better performers that night.

When he was on stage I left the room for a while (did I mention I don’t like him?) and dodo and I saw a girl in the cafe with a mac and a lot of open terminals. How rare! She was pretty decent looking too. A well… I already have a great girl.
But geek girls do exist.

Back to school again

My intership is almost at it’s end. Just a few more days and I’m done there. I was asked(!) if I wanted to stay working there parttime, sure… it’s better then my last job.

I already started with school. I’m doing my intership and school at the same time at the moment as i began late. I’m doing the minor Game Technology which takes a technical approach to creating games. Lessons on Human Computer Interaction, mathematics in games and some courses about prgramming the Gameboy Advance, j2me and Orge (an 3d engine).

Together with Aczid and Risie I’ll be making a GBA game. Hope we’ll succeed in most of our feature wishes.
