Awesomeness of last.fm

Last.Fm is a really awesome (to use this vague term) web 2.0 site. This site is in an ideal position in the market. What started as a simple this-is-what-I-listen-to stat site grew to a much larger community site, where people can find and share information about music. People still share their statistics, and this information is used to your own advantage. Music recommendations for example based on what other people listen.

My latest really great experience is this: A Paul Gilbert concert. Last.fm gives you a load of event recommendations based on what you listen. If it wasn’t for Last.fm i would have missed this concert. Now I wonder, do they cooperate with the ticketmaster service? It would make a lot of sense if they did, this is clearly a win-win situation for the site (commission) and for the ticket seller (more costumers) and the user (more concerts!).

My nickname, which I thought was a pretty unique one (atleast in it’s spelling) does not seem to be… unique. When I google on my nickname this blog comes in fourth. My Last.fm page is the first and a photo made by dodo of me in a Japanese metro second. Thirdth is some dude which isn’t me, but uses the same nickname as me for his ebay.
My blog is the fourth entry. Which uses the wrong link, it should be this. And I can’t seem to get it much higher. If I really want to, I have to use some form of the much discussed (especially on Digg) Search Engine Optimization, and outrank Last.fm and Ebay on the Drakonen keyword, which will be hard to do if not impossible.

I’ve been a user of the audioscrobbler plugin (all mayor players) for a while now, but today I explored the new Last.fm stuff.
They have a pretty cool last.fm player. It delivers some sort of shoutcast service BUT they are personalised! It chooses music depending on the music you listen often. It creates a personalised stream for you with songs you know and songs you don’t (that’s interresting). You can even say if you like or dislike the song currently playing. And now the even even more instresting part, you can skip songs.

Great service, and above all, it’s free (with advertisements, but not annoying)

I found some time again to work on this little project. It’s not finished, but it does the most important stuff: generate a playlist with random intro’s and outro’s (with or without dj chatter or both). Here it is.

This slashdot entry reminded me of this great movie: Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning. It’s everybodies fantasy come true, Babylon 5 versus Star trek. A must see if you’ve seen both series!

Saturday I went to see a live performance of my of my online mates’ band with my girlfriend. It was a pretty long trip to Den Helder.
They played very good, especially considering this was their first performance. Some nice guitar work on the metallica songs, although their singing could use some improvement.

Can’t get enough of Machinae Supremacy. The origin of SID metal or so they say… anyway it is free and good! I like it! And in OGG too! It Can’t get much better than that!

An other Kind of music I like, Drum and Bass, has some very good free music too. Like Scientific.
I can really recommend the Remixes. Especially this one.

Edit:
Damn, forgot paniq a great artist. Makes some weird music sometimes. It has a nice psycedelic atmosphere most of the time.
